It’s a Match!

So it’s been a couple weeks since we found out that my transplant team found a potential match. Just a few days ago they confirmed the match is indeed a match. I think it’s just hit me? I am getting a new kidney.

We had begun to settle into our new normal — the dialysis, the mental and physical fatigue. Then one rainy afternoon it all changed when I heard the words “it’s a match.” With just three words, all our prayers and the prayers of our friends and family were answered. Wow, I am getting a new kidney.

I’d be remiss not mentioning my partner in crime, my beautiful wife Hallie who is selflessly donating her kidney to a random person so I can get a new lease on life. From the moment our transplant team presented paired exchange to us as an option, Hallie was on board and eager to sacrifice her body for me. For more than two years, through the strain this has put on our marriage at times, she’s been the epitome of our vows — “for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance.” Because of this woman, this blessing from God, I am getting a new kidney.

What’s next?
Whelp we both are heading into surgery on August 19th (this Wednesday). From what we can gather, our paired exchange link includes four people. I think as the date gets closer it will really hit home. Right now my real worry is Hallie and the idea that we both will be going into major surgery on the same day (sweet baby Jesus please help me!). We both have confidence in our transplant teams, however, it is a little unnerving knowing we can’t really be there for each other. In faith and with God guiding our surgeons hands, I am getting a new kidney.

How can you help? (links below)
Honestly your prayers are more than enough. SERIOUSLY! The calls, the text messages, the Facebook messages have been encouraging and inspiring. If you feel like you want to do more, our friends have set up a couple different ways you could help our family through surgery and the long road to recovery. If you choose this route, thank you, thank you, thank you in advance! Because you care, I am getting a new kidney.
